Those who work in trade recruitment will know that more and more sick days are being had by people. Trade jobs are now suffering, and research has shown that people 4.3 million sick days have been had recently. 561,000 are the result of accidents in the workplace. The construction industry alone lost 392,000 days between 2014 and 2017. This was mainly because of illnesses that were made worse by the jobs that people had. This is a shocking statistic to say the least, and this is especially the case when you look at the fact that a lot of it was caused by anxiety or even depression. on average, every day 3,927 workers called in sick to work in 2014 and 147,000 were off for seven days or more. This shows how risky it is to work in the construction industry and this is especially the case when you look at the fact that half of accidents that were fatal actually resulted from people falling from a great height. It is important to know that not all dangers come from high up. 100,003 people were injured as the result of a slip or fall, and 84,734 experienced an injury as the result of carrying or even lifting something. 246 construction cases were also brought to trial and one conviction happened. 205 cases resulted with the employer being issued with a fine.
Sure, construction workers often do everything they can to stay safe when they work on a site but at the end of the day, more needs to be done. Employees can only be safe if they are given the means and this is certainly something that this study highlights. Only time will tell if this changes over the coming years but right now, it's not looking good.
