Aibel Lands More Johan Sverdrup Work

Norwegian oilfield services provider Aibel will build the converter station at Haugsneset for land-based power supply to the giant offshore oil field, the Johan Sverdrup.

The contract, awarded by the nation’s largest oil company Statoil, also includes trenching and laying of two sets of 300kV alternating-current cables from Kårstø to Haugsneset for both phases of the North Sea field development.

The converter equipment will be delivered by ABB Norge will be installed by Aibel. The total contract value is about NOK 600 million ($74.4 million).

“We recently delivered our first conversion platform for wind energy to Germany and we previously had major conversion work on the Troll platform. For us, this is therefore an important and natural continuation which consolidates our position in this field,” says Jan Skogseth, CEO of Aibel.

This is not the first time Aibel has been awarded a contract related to the Johan Sverdrup development. In February this year, Aibel won the contract for the construction of the deck for the drilling platform on the Johan Sverdrup field.

The Johan Sverdrup oil field will be operated by land-based power from production start late in 2019. The first phase of the Johan Sverdrup field development will also prepare for a land-based power solution for a full development of the Johan Sverdrup field and other fields on the Utsira High by 2022.

The Johan Sverdrup partners are: Statoil (40.0267%) (operator), Lundin Norway (22.6), Petoro (17.36), Det norske oljeselskap (11.5733) and Maersk Oil (8.44).
