AMEC Secures Gulf’s Second Biggest Oil Field Extension

Global oil and gas services firm, AMEC Foster Wheeler, has announced the extension on a contract for the Abu Dhabi Upper Zakum field.

The contract extends AMEC’s remit to supply all project management and consultancy (PMC) on the project that located 52 miles (84 km) offshore Abu Dhabi.

The Upper Zakum field is recognised as the Arabian Gulf’s second larges offshore oil field, with proven reserves in excess of 50 billion barrels of oil equivalent and daily production rates at a steady 500,000 barrels of oil a day, spread amongst it four man made production islands.

The value of the contract extension has not been released, however it looks to keep AMEC’s Middle Eastern operations going for some time yet, and well beyond the initial contract singing in June 2008.

Its believed AMEC’s future work will include the delivery of a Integrated Project Management team, and overseeing contractors in developing Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) work scopes as the Upper Zakum field looked to commission further productions facilities by 2017 that will take its current production up to 1 million barrels of oil a day.

Roberto Penno, AMEC Foster Wheeler Group President, said: “This UZ750 contract win cements Amec Foster Wheeler’s ongoing engagement in this strategically important project. The Middle East is a key growth area for Amec Foster Wheeler and we look forward to continuing our relationship with ZADCO on this next important phase of work.”

The contract was award by the joint venture umbrella- Zakum Development Company (ZADCO), the organisation developing and operating the Upper Zakum field. The partners of the company include the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, ExxonMobil and the Japan Oil Development Company Ltd.
