USA Plants Are Still Relying on Sources of Uranium from Abroad
US plant owners have purchased way less uranium in the year 2022 when you compare it to the year 2021. They have also had to buy it at a much higher price as well. US uranium buys keep on being dominated by a lot of foreign suppliers and it looks like this is amounting to thousands of pounds. The EIA have the Uranium Marketing Report as well. This provides a lot of details regarding the marketing activities from the USA and it also shows the summary data which goes back to the year 2001. This information is based on collected data and this can range from deliveries to contracts, enrichment services and more. The uranium purchased by a number of owners and operators for nuclear power looks to be down and the total power reactors are down as well. This is not good to say the least, especially for those who work in renewables. A lot of the deliveries were of foreign origin and the top source appears to account for well over 27% of the deliveries. 35 million pounds of uranium feed is being delivered to enrichers and it seems that 41% of the total feed is going to enrichment suppliers. 14.2 million enrichment services have been bought by US operators and it seems that 75% of this was from foreign-origin SWU. At the end of the day, when you break all of the data down, US commercial inventories, including those owned by plant-owners, brokers and even converters, are going to be down by 1% of the 141.7 million pounds. Contracted deliveries and unfulfilled market requirements represent an anticipated market and it is safe to say that more has to be done to try and make sure that we are no longer reliant on foreign sources of uranium.
